Importance of Online Safety

As digital media use becomes increasingly common among children, it is crucial for parents and educators to be proactive in safeguarding their online experiences. According to recent research, 85% of children aged 3-5 are using digital devices, highlighting the need for effective online safety measures.

Key Strategies for Online Safety

 Supervision:

Always supervise children when they are using digital devices. Encourage them to use devices in shared spaces where adults can monitor their activities.

 Content Selection:

Choose age-appropriate apps and websites. Platforms like YouTube Kids offer safe alternatives to regular YouTube, providing content specifically designed for young audiences. Google Safe Search can help to filter out adult content from your child’s search results. Google Safe Search

 Education:

Teach children about online safety from an early age. Discuss what the internet is, the types of content they might encounter, and encourage them to talk to you if they see anything upsetting. Video: Know your friends with Josh and Sue

 Parental Controls:

Utilize parental controls on devices and internet services to restrict access to inappropriate content. Most devices offer settings to limit what children can see and do online.

 Balanced Screen Time:

Encourage active engagement with digital content. If screen time is necessary, opt for educational videos that promote movement and interaction, rather than passive viewing.
