Local Authority Transport for your Child

Transport for your child is arranged via Hertfordshire Local Authority Transport Team. Your local Special Education needs caseworker can best advise you as to where and who to apply to see if your child is entitled to transport. Please see: hertfordshire.gov.uk for details

The details below are taken for the Hertfordshire website

  • How a pupil's transport entitlement is assessed, for pupils with statements of educational need or education and health care plans attending special school. Once your child's Education and Health Care Plan is finalised the Transport Team will then assess their eligibility for free home to school transport.

In summary, if a pupil is attending their nearest suitable school, where the distance from home to school is over the statutory walking distance, they will be eligible for free home to school transport.

  • More than 2 miles (3218 m) from home for children aged under 8
  • More than 3 miles (4827 m) from home for hcildren aged 8 and over

If a pupil is attending their nearest suitable school and their home to school distance is less than the 2/3 miles they will not be entitled under the distance strand of the policy however they may be entitled to free home to school transport based upon their individual needs and whether they are unable to walk the 2/3 miles from home to school, accompanied as necessary.

If a pupil is not attending their nearest suitable school they will not be entitled to free home to school transport and it will be the parents/carers responsibility to transport their child to and from school.

The full Home to School Transport policy can be found at the following link

www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/schooltransport

  • How and when parents/carers will be informed of the outcome of the transport assessment

When a pupil has been assessed for transport the Transport Team will write to the parents/carers to tell them the outcome of the assessment.

If a pupil is eligible the parent will be sent a confirmation letter together with a short Response Form. The parent/carer will need to complete and return the Response Form as we need to know, before the transport is set up, if the pupil has any special mobility or medical needs when travelling in a vehicle. Guidance on how to complete the form will be in the letter.

If a pupil is not eligible under the distance strand of the policy they may be eligible due to their individual transport needs. Parent/carer will receive a letter asking them to provide additional information and supporting evidence explaining why the pupil would be unable to walk 2/3 miles from home to school accompanied as necessary. Parents/carers will recieve an Individual Transport Needs form and Guidance Notes, which they should complete and return to the Transport Team. Supporting evidence can be from a doctor or a professional who is familiar with the pupil's case and will need to evidence explaining why the pupil would be unable to walk 2 - 3 miles from home to school accompanied as necessary.
